Fundraising, like training for a marathon, requires commitment, time, and planning. Here are some quick tips to help you on your way:
1. Set realistic goals.
Map out your goals by planning your start date and end date, with specific monthly and weekly benchmarks in between to help you manage your progress. Some examples of benchmarks include the number of pledges received, the amount of money you raise, or how many hours you spend fundraising. Be sure to track your progress with a chart or calendar.
2. Identify sources.
By categorizing your family members, colleagues, acquaintances, etc., you’ll be able to approach each group with a clearly structured message. Compile phone numbers and e-mail addresses, and don’t forget to utilize social networking sites such as Facebook, to help keep track of each individual you contact. A bigger pool of contacts will yield more money faster.
3. The message.
Make it clear that you are raising money to support the Chicago Diabetes Project, and that you are training for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon to show your commitment to the cause. Refer them to this website and ChicagoDiabetesProject.org for additional information with fliers and other handouts to get your message across. Remember to ask boldly, “Will you sponsor me?” leaving it up to them to respond with a “yes” or a “no.”
4. Follow up, ask for referrals.
After you receive a commitment, be sure to follow up a few days later with a friendly reminder to see if they have made their contribution. To increase your contacts pool, ask your sources if they know anyone else that would be interested in contributing.
5. Utilize Social Media.
Never underestimate the power on the Internet! Be sure to update your FaceBook and Twitter account often. It is a great place to post your website and let your friends and family know about the success of your runs. On you FaceBook page, be sure to always have your fundraising website address in the "Write something about yourself" text box.
